LA AUTO SHOW ’13

Mercedes Gran Turismo Concept Car

Every year I go to the Auto Show here in LA and challenge myself to get a few decent pictures with my little P7700 point and shoot. To be honest, I’d probably be better off with a phone camera by this point in its model life, but its a great challenge. Not many pics this year because frankly, 99% of new cars are crap. Which is sad, no?

Image
The best Porsche at the show was one that was 30 years old.
The new Macan, a cut down Cayenne priced at $49k is a tiny, plastic abomination.
If you didn’t know VW owned Porsche, you do now.
Are their sportscars still great? Yes. But their new suburban wagons are truly awful. And hey, to prove my point, here’s somebody ordering one:

No, I have no idea why he’s wearing shorts over track pants either. It was 80 degrees in Downtown today.

COOLEST THINGS AT THE SHOW:

Image
Acura had these nifty ‘holograms’ projected on to vapour built in to their desks on their stand.
That is the end of anything cool involving the word ‘Acura’.

This guy was photographing the show with a 40 year old Rollei camera in medium format film , using a flash from 1974. Yes, that is beyond hipster. Very, very cool, but why?

Image
Best car in the show was a ’68 Camaro that belongs to ‘comedian’ Tim Allen.
It was not for sale.
He has many other cars

OTHER CARS
Image
The Lexus LF-LC concept car looked very tasty.
In the background you can see the terrific Volvo stand, which now its Chinese owned is playing up its Scandi heritage to the hilt.
Great idea, excellent architectural execution, terrible, terrible cars. We miss you Volvo.

Image
The new Stingray. Will sell by the dozen here in LA.

ImageImage
Cadillac may actually be on to something with the ElMirage if they do build it. Could take on the Bentley Continental market, which is still surprisingly strong.

OTHER STUFF

Image
This poor woman had to spend the day talking up Sebastian Vettel, and how he’d once sat in an Infiniti. Well, as long as they’re paying you Sebastian…..
Given that Infiniti is primarily a North American brand I’m not entirely sure they’re getting their money’s worth out of F1. Perhaps they sell tens of millions in Japan?
Image
Jaguar need to tell their sales people to go a little easy on the botox.

Image
This scene was repeated on a number of stands. These poor girls.
Yes Mr VP of Sales, please do go on……
